Three local items deserve a spot on the calendar this month.
Parkville's official Route 9 page links to the July 21, 2026 work-session presentation and traffic-study animations. The city says George Butler Associates and Confluence are designing the next downtown segments, from 4th Street toward the Park University entrance and from the downtown triangle along 1st Street toward Mill Street and South Crooked Road.
The proposed improvements include crosswalks, a traffic signal, turning lanes, street lighting, and other pedestrian and traffic upgrades. Parkville's current estimate puts the total project cost at $18.29 million, with the financing plan using grants, use-tax transfers, interest earnings, and debt financing.
Parkville has also been using public work sessions as part of the design process. Those sessions do not mean active lane closures or construction. Use the official city project page for current updates.

The Gazette reported a heavy exchange between officers and alleged bandits at the Red Crown Tavern northwest of Parkville and said the group was believed to be the Barrow gang. Kenneth R. Klamm's accompanying history-group post identifies it as the Bonnie and Clyde shootout; a Missouri State Highway Patrol historical account corroborates that Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were among those in the Red Crown cabins near Platte City.
Rain came in almost exactly normal; the largest single-day total was 2.25 inches.
Temperatures averaged 79.1 degrees, a modest 0.8 degrees above normal despite the sharper heat near the end of the period.
KMCI year-to-date rain reached 32.02 inches, 7.58 inches above the ACIS normal value for this point in the year.

Missouri Conservationist notes that ruby-throated hummingbirds are common statewide and reach their seasonal peak in August before most have moved south by October.
Native blooms such as beebalm, blazing stars, blue sage, wild columbine, and summer phlox give them natural fuel.
